Abstract

Groundwater use is secular and continues to be the primary way to meet water supply needs, especially in rural areas characterized by low economic capacity for complex water treatment required in most surface water sources. However, the Gaza Province in Mozambique faces the brackish groundwater in most of the boreholes that are the basis for the water supply to the rural population. This research was developed to evaluate the physical and chemical water quality of the water sources used in public supply, highlighting the high concentration of dissolved salts. To this end, 39 dispersed water sources were selected and subjected to water quality analyses as a sample of the 14 districts of the Gaza Province. After these analyses, it was concluded that all the wells presented Total Dissolved Solids values ​​above the maximum limits established by MISAU – Ministry of Health and WHO – World Health Organization. Furthermore, it was verified that sodium (Na) and chlorides (Cl) are the most predominant elements and contribute significantly to the high TDS concentrations found in the water analyzed. Therefore, the desalination of brackish water is recommended to meet the potability standards of water for human consumption, with emphasis on the removal of arsenic, lead and iron found in some sources.
