This study analyzes trends in Amazon River discharge at the Óbidos (PA) gauging station, based on a historical data series spanning 1970 to 2023, with the aim of understanding changes in the hydrological regime and their potential socio-environmental impacts. A quantitative approach was adopted, applying the nonparametric Mann Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator to identify and quantify temporal trends. The results showed a significant increase in discharge during the rainy season and a decrease in the months associated with the dry season, indicating an intensification of hydrological seasonality, characterized by more voluminous floods and more severe droughts over the past decades. Furthermore, the integrated analysis with documentary records allowed for the verification of a correspondence between the observed trends and the occurrence of extreme hydrological events in the municipality, such as floods and droughts, which have caused significant impacts, including flooding, population displacement, damage to infrastructure, and limitations on local economic activities. Thus, the results contribute to advancing knowledge about the hydrological dynamics of the Amazon basin and reinforce the importance of continuous monitoring and the application of statistical methods to support water resource management and territorial planning in vulnerable regions.
