This study aimed to conduct a literature review based on consultations of the editions of the Statistical Yearbooks of Brazil (SYBs), available for consultation at the electronic address https://biblioteca.ibge.gov.br/biblioteca-catalogo?view=detalhes&id=720, part of the IBGE Library, for the period from 1908 to 2022. The set of AEB editions selected as the basis for this literature review confirmed that the IBGE topographic maps were the main sources, and therefore documented technical content, used by the IBGE as the publisher of each edition from 1973 to 2022. They were also the main sources for determining the "highest points in Brazil," proving their usefulness as research and consultation sources for the scientific production of the IBGE itself for Brazilian society over these 49 years. It is expected that, with the results of the studies presented here, toponyms such as “Pico dos Marins” (chronologically considered the first highest point in the State of São Paulo) and “Pedra da Mina,” currently the highest point in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range and the entire state of São Paulo, will also be recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by State and National Public Management. This recognition will also be given by the Scientific Community for the attention and contributions made to better definitions and presentations of mountain environments in recent decades. The aim is for these results to be used in new studies that contribute to a Brazilian definition of the concept of “Mountain” that is consistent with the particular natural aspects of the highest portions of the national relief.
